What is this list?

Friends have decided to create a list of forty things to do before I turn forty in September. I've decided to play along and try to complete the list before my birthday. I'm lucky that Jennie will also play along and help me complete this list.

I've decided not to post the list on the blog. Why not? Revealing the list would be similar to reading the book before going to see the movie. In most cases disappointing. Also, the likely followers of this blog already know the content of the list.
(Update: A few people said that the list should be online so that they could volunteer/sign up for some of these activities)

For the purpose of this blog, I've decided to call them "task". Most of them can be completed locally and without advance planning. I also plan to drag in the creators of the list into accomplishing some of the tasks with me.

40. Lose 10 pounds/get a fabulous six-pack (abs)

No, I do not have a fabulous six pack.  I do have a six pack, it's just a little insulated for the coming winter.

I did try my best.  Signed up for this great "core cruncher" class at the Jack Purcell community center.
Every Tuesday at 6:30.  I think it cost 8 or 10$ to drop by a class.

The lack of running this summer did not help.  Maybe next year.

30. Milk a cow

The cow was made of plastic.
The utters were made of rubber
The milk was water with a white dye

The place was the Almonte puppet fair earlier this summer.

I have a picture, but it was taken with a regular camera so it will have to wait.

31. Win the lottery

Good thing the amount was not specified.  The somewhat regular ticket purchase with my friends from CIPO paid back 10$ this week.

Done.

I think I was more likely to be hit by lightning sitting in the sea container at work today than win the lottery jackpot.

37. Solve a Rubik's cube

Ha! Done!

All mixed up
Make a cross
Fix the top corners

Fix the edge pieces

Flip and make a cross (or a bit more if your are lucky)

Bring all the colors to the top (which used to be the bottom)

Solve the corners
And Voila!

Done
Very simple guide is here: Official guide

There are lots of methods out there, but for the original solution, you need to remember about 5 sequences of  5 to 10 moves.

34. Climb the Peace Tower/tour Parliament

Perfect Saturday morning to walk down bank street and make my way to the peace tower.

With my new shoes in a bag and my cell phone camera, I fit right in with the tourist (Except that I speak both official languages)  Hmmm, it would be helpful if the guides brushed up on their German, Chinese and Japanese.  Kudos to the security guard who knew the single Chinese word that means "You need to turn on your cell phone"
Ticket counter, what ticket counter... It's free!

Did not have a chance to to do the tour (the next one was two hours away), but I did climb the peace tower. One flight of stairs and a quick elevator ride, and...
New roof on the library

Ants walking down the path

Fun fact!

20. Paddle boat on the canal

So after the dip in Mooney's bay we went to Dow's lake to rent a canoe  Our friends rented the paddle boat.
It was pretty busy, a lot of young adult were renting canoes, paddle boats or kayaks.

16$ will get you a canoe for an hour. The rental includes a smelly life jacket.  How bad was the smell?  Just liek day three of the man river canoe trip...

What did we learn:  paddle boats are slow, but can do a 360 ten times faster than a canoe.

The Leis?  Why not!

Tough choices: Blue or Red?
It's clear who's in for a joy ride...

From the paddle boat: Left,, no right, keep it straight, dam thing does not work.
  Why is it called "Dow"

18 Swim in Mooney's Bay

Weather: Just like a summer day
Water quality: Unknown
Temperature: Refreshing
Lifeguard: MIA

Today was a busy day but the opportunity presented itself to go to Mooneys Bay for a quick dip.

The beaches are officially closed, but there were a few people relaxing on the sand a few crazy kids playing in the water.  This kid made a run for it.

What I am getting into?
Water quality: Good
Ryan tried to stop me, but I would have none of it.

Water Quality: Bad

Almost there

Getting wet
DONE!

"The city advises people not to swim whenever the coliform count is 100 or greater for two consecutive days, or the count is 200 or above on a single day.
Swimming in water with high E. coli can increase the risk of gastrointestinal illness, as well as eye and ear infections."
