What is this list?

Friends have decided to create a list of forty things to do before I turn forty in September. I've decided to play along and try to complete the list before my birthday. I'm lucky that Jennie will also play along and help me complete this list.

I've decided not to post the list on the blog. Why not? Revealing the list would be similar to reading the book before going to see the movie. In most cases disappointing. Also, the likely followers of this blog already know the content of the list.
(Update: A few people said that the list should be online so that they could volunteer/sign up for some of these activities)

For the purpose of this blog, I've decided to call them "task". Most of them can be completed locally and without advance planning. I also plan to drag in the creators of the list into accomplishing some of the tasks with me.

33. Participate in a protest on Parliament Hill

This Sunday I went to the May Day protest on Parliament Hill. The history of the May Day protest can be found here: May Day protest origin . The original protest by workers to get a standard 8 hour day.

This protest was organised by some of the national unions.  CUPE represented the majority.  I was disappointed by the numbers.  A few buses brought workers from out of town.  I estimate that there were about 250 protesters.  The promise of an evening BBQ, burgers with a few beers, probably convinced the hard core union fellows to board the buses.   It was mostly men.  The crowd was complete with a few subscribers to the anarchist and communist political parties.

The speeches focused on the current government wanting to make changes to pension plans, eliminate pension plans, take away benefits, increase taxes, reduce services.  "Say NO!" was repeated over and over again.  There was also a lot of talk about the current political unrest and popular revolt in Egypt and Libya.  Basically the people can bring about major changes.

Something that bugs me a lot: If you are a job that requires you to give speeches, then you better be good at it, and your staff should tell you when you suck.  Am I the only one that tunes out as soon as the speaker is not good.  It's like listening to Duceppe trying to talk in English or the late OCTranspo union head trying to defend their strike position.
